How to dress your Poodle for cold winter weather.

There are couple things we need to consider before putting anything on our Poodle:

1. size of your poodle

2. age & health level

3. length of hair

4. activity level they are going to do outside

5. weather

1. smaller poodles might need warmer coats to keep their bodies warm. Fleece-lined rain coats would be great.

2. older dogs, young puppies, and frail dogs need extra protection too.

3. poodles with bigger natural coats will not need a warm suit, but a light one to prevent accumulation of snow balls. Ultimate Norway full-body rain suit would be an excellent choice. it will provide some wind barrier, but will still "breathe".

4. what is your poodle will be doing outside is very important: when actively running and playing - warm winter coat is not needed. Even MUST not be worn to avoid overheating. If you are going for a slow walk - some extra layer would be nice.

5. weather: if it is cold, but dry - make your choice of wear considering all the factors above. cold and wet - it is always good idea to protect poodle's hair from getting wet with a light waterproof suit. mild with lots of snow - we all know how fast poodle's hair will collect sticky snow balls, and how long it takes to take those off :)

Save yourself some time for better things to do - let your poodle wear light, breathable coat.

What are the choices for your Poodle's closet for winter?

Warm:Norway full body suit with fleece lining

Light: full-body raincoats. In my opinion, the best set of coats for winter would be:breathable waterproof full-body raincoat and warm blanket-type coat to put on top of the rainsuit if needed for extra warmth.

Now, to the shoe rack.

Factors to consider when choosing shoes:

1. color of the coat - shoes have to complement the coat (we'll talk about purses later). LOL

2. age, weather, activity level: all-weather boots will be great for active poodles in any winter weather. Fleece-lined ones are for lower activity level or a very cold day. Some poodles don't mind going barefoot in -20C.

3. what is your Poodle going to walk on. Very important: - city streets covered with salt and chemicals - put the boots ON to protect those precious poodle feet against the harm of, eating through everything, salt mixture. We do rust-proof our cars, don't we.

AVOID any puddles of antifreeze. Don't allow your dog to taste or step in antifreeze. Just the tiny amount licked off the feet can be harmful. If no boots were worn - wash your poodle's feet right after. -- snow covered fields and parks. * nice soft dry snow - to boot or not is your choice.

When poodles run and play, the feet get hot and, snow melts in between toes creating ice - not very comfortable. * crusty snow ( usually after warmer temperatures or rain) - boots would be very beneficial to protect poodle's feet from cuts.

What about creams, pawstiks etc. They are great to protect poodle's paws from ice building in between their toes. Make sure you reapply it for continuous benefit. Again, observe your poodle - if he likes to go barefoot or not.

Can Poodles run and play in coats and boots? Yes they can :) Watch "Poodle Snow Fun" video on YouTube.

Is there anything else you might want for your Poodle's Winter Closet?

There are warm snoods for windy days, leg cuffs (sleeves) to avoid those snowballs decorating your poodle's legs.

Dressing your poodle for cold winter weather is not just a game of "let's dress up the puppy-dog", but the way to make those winter days more enjoyable for both, your poodle and you. It does take some extra time to put the snow gear on, but gives you more time to cuddle after coming back from those sobering walks.

Winter is wonderful when you are ready to enjoy it!
